Nimbus School of Recording Arts

Nimbus School of Recording & Media is a private technical music production institute situated in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada,^[1] providing education in audio engineering, music production, and the music business. The school was founded in 2009 by Bob Ezrin, Garth Richardson, and Kevin Williams.^[2][3] Nimbus is accredited nationally by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency,^[4] regionally by the British Columbia Education Quality Assurance,^[5] and is academically certified with the media hardware/software company AVID,^[6] maker of the popular audio recording software Pro Tools^[7] Nimbus has an A rating from the Better Business Bureau.^[8]

Nimbus offers programs in Audio Engineering, Music Production, Post & Game Audio Production, Video Production, Live Sound Engineering & Recording, Beats & Urban Music Production and Music Business.:^[9][10]

• (AMP) Advanced Music Production: a one-year diploma program focused on audio engineering, recording, and production processes. Class topics include cables, patch bays, decibels, wave theory, equalization, miking techniques for drums, bass, electric guitars, vocals, keyboards, re-miking and re-amping, metering and recording levels, autotune, dynamic processing, effects processing, sound replacement, music theory, MIDI theory, digital theory, comping and editing, mixing and mastering.^[11]
• (BUMP) Beats and Urban Music Production - a one-year diploma program focused on the production techniques used for Hip Hop and Urban Music production. Class topics begin covering much of the same content as the AMP program, before breaking away to cover genre specific topics such as the origins and culture of Hip Hop, sampling concepts, business strategy, production, DAW, samplers, turntables, soft synths, plugins, studio recording techniques, pre-production, mixing, mastering, and growing a sound bank.^[12]
• (MP) Music Business - a one-year diploma program focused on the business side of the music industry. Class topics begin covering much of the same content as the AMP program, before breaking away to cover business specific topics such as marketing and promotion, music law, business plans, social media, revenue streams, songwriting, performance, artist demos, branding, media, and self-promotion.^[13]

History

Back in the late 1960s record producer Jack Richardson, father of Nimbus co-founder Garth Richardson recorded over 240 albums, 30 Billboard-charted singles, 20 Billboard-charted albums, 5 gold and 3 platinum albums, all at Nimbus 9 studios in Toronto. Jack Richardson is credited with mentoring rock music producers Bob Ezrin and Garth Richardson at the Nimbus 9 studios. In recent years, Bob Ezrin and Garth Richardson decided to start the Nimbus School of Recording Arts, specifically to pass on what they believed were the traditions of excellence in audio engineering and music production taught to them by Jack Richardson^[14]
